The U.S. Food and Drug Administration have just approved a revolutionary system for laser eye surgery. The system consists of a diagnostic machine – called a wavefront measurement device – and an accompanying laser. The wavefront device creates a detailed map of the eye’s structural irregularities, which is then sent to the laser’s computer system. This map then guides the laser in its ablation of the cornea. The level of detail that the system provides was previously unattainable and should help ophthalmologists correct vision more accurately.
